Lenovo Legion Go S: First SteamOS Handhelds Launching Soon!
Lenovo is stepping up its game by releasing the first SteamOS handhelds not manufactured by Valve themselves! The Legion Go S handhelds, running on SteamOS, are slated to ship on May 25th, according to a recent Best Buy listing spotted by The Verge. However, the price point is slightly higher than initially promised.
Legion Go S Specs and Pricing
The Legion Go S with SteamOS starts at $549.99. This base model boasts an 8-inch, 120Hz OLED display, ergonomic controls, a fingerprint reader and touchpad, 16GB of RAM, and the AMD Ryzen Z2 Go chip. For those seeking more power, a $749.99 version offers the same features, but upgrades to the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor (previously seen in the original Legion Go) and 32GB of RAM.
One of the most exciting aspects of these handhelds is the pre-installed SteamOS. This should provide a seamless user experience similar to the Steam Deck, with easy setup and compatibility with a vast library of games through Valve's Proton software.
Lenovo released a Windows 11 version of the Legion Go S in February for $730. While we found it to be a solid device, its price and Windows integration were points of concern. The promise of a $500 SteamOS version seemed like an attractive alternative. However, with the starting price now at $549.99, its value proposition is slightly diminished, especially considering the excellent Steam Deck OLED is available at a similar price.
A thorough review is needed to determine the full impact of SteamOS on the Legion Go S, both with the Ryzen Z2 Go and the Z1 Extreme. Nevertheless, the addition of more SteamOS devices to the market is a welcome development for gamers.
Pre-orders for the Legion Go S with SteamOS are now open, with shipping scheduled for May 25th. The Ryzen Z1 Extreme model will also ship on the same date for $749.99. Additionally, Lenovo offers a Windows 11 version of the Ryzen Z1 Extreme Legion Go S for $829.99.
