TCL Aims for Parents with Eye-Friendly Nxtpaper 5G Junior Phone

Mobile

I've been following TCL's Nxtpaper tech for a while now, and I think it's pretty cool that they're finally targeting parents. I mean, who else is constantly worrying about their kids' screen time? The new Nxtpaper 5G Junior, announced at IFA, is specifically designed with that in mind.

What's neat about it is this "Max Ink Mode". With the press of a dedicated button, it turns the display into a monochrome, E Ink-like screen. It's way easier on the eyes, especially for reading, and could be a clever way to wean kids off those super-stimulating games without a complete ban.

And it isn't just about the screen. TCL's loaded it up with parental controls powered by Google's Family Link, along with a "Digital Detox" mode. While I'm not entirely sold on the "AI Genius Squad" characters, I appreciate the effort to make healthy phone habits more engaging.

However, it’s a large phone, sporting a 6.7-inch display, and I wonder if that won’t be a problem for smaller hands. On the upside, 256GB of storage is enough for apps and games.

TCL also unveiled the Nxtpaper 60 Ultra, boasting the latest Nxtpaper 4.0 tech for reduced glare and flicker. This one’s even bigger with a massive 7.2-inch display and a triple camera system, including a 50MP telephoto lens. While the Junior phone is aimed at kids, the Ultra seems to be for anyone who wants a gentler, paper-like display experience.
