The Push for Starbase City
The idea of Starbase as a city was first proposed by Elon Musk in 2021. Following approval from Cameron County, residents near the Starbase launch site will vote on May 3 to decide whether to create this new municipality. Given that most residents are SpaceX employees who petitioned for the election, the outcome is likely to favor the rocket company.
Legislation and Beach Closures
Adding to the momentum, a bill filed on March 14 aims to grant SpaceX control over road and beach closures for its rocket activities. While the bill doesn't explicitly mention SpaceX, it applies to counties with spaceports and beach access on the Gulf of Mexico. Currently, Cameron County manages these closures, but if the bill passes, Starbase would assume control on weekdays, while the county retains authority on weekends.
Environmental Concerns
The potential environmental impact of SpaceX's operations remains a significant concern. A lawsuit filed by conservation groups alleges that the Federal Aviation Administration rushed SpaceX's Starship permitting process without adequate environmental review. Additionally, SpaceX faces fines for allegedly illegally dumping pollutants into a Texas waterway.
Despite these concerns, SpaceX is also planning to open a $15 million shopping center and restaurant near Starbase, indicating its commitment to expanding its presence in the area. The future of Boca Chica hangs in the balance, as SpaceX's ambitions collide with environmental protection and local interests.
