Nothing's latest phones stand out with their unique hardware design and Android software tweaks. But after using the Nothing Phone 3a for a few weeks, the Essential Space app has become a key feature, even on this lower-mid-range smartphone.

Essential Space is hard to define simply. It's a mix of screenshot gallery, notes app, to-do list, and AI-powered organization, all in one place. Unlike the fragmented AI experiences of Google AI, Galaxy AI, or Apple Intelligence, Essential Space centralizes everything.

The dedicated "Essential Key" enhances its utility. A single press screenshots your phone, saving it to Space. A long press records your voice and transcribes it using AI. A double press launches the app itself. While the double press is a bit odd and could be used for screenshots instead, the key provides quick access to the app's core functions.

Streamlining AI Functionality

While Google's Pixel Screenshot app organizes screenshots effectively, it's limited to just that. Nothing plans to add a Smart Collections feature to Space, expanding its capabilities. Essential Space extracts dates, creates to-do lists, and analyzes screenshots, associating them with time, date, and location. It simplifies remembering the context of screenshots and even suggests actionable items.

Essential Space integrates AI seamlessly. Instead of just offering image generation or email rewriting, it automates tasks like transcribing voice recordings. While the mid-range processor means AI processing happens on the cloud, Nothing assures users that processing requests are deleted after completion. Still, high-end phones can often handle similar AI tasks on-device.

A limitation is the inability to directly share items with Space without using the Essential Key. Screenshots of photos or websites revert to the disjointed process of other Android devices or iPhones.
