Instagram's New Community Chats: A Discord Rival?

Social Media

Okay, Instagram users, gather 'round! It looks like Meta's favorite photo-sharing app might be getting a whole lot more interactive. Renowned app sleuth Alessandro Paluzzi (who's usually spot-on with these things) has sniffed out a potential new feature: Community Chats!

Imagine Discord, but baked right into your Instagram. That's the vibe we're getting. According to the leaked screenshots, these chats would let you create groups around specific topics. Think of it: dedicated spaces for your photography club, your favorite fandom, or even just a group of close friends. You'd be able to control who joins, keeping the vibes positive and the conversations relevant.

But here's the kicker: unlike Instagram's broadcast channels, where creators are the only ones who can speak, everyone in a Community Chat can jump into the conversation! That's right, a true community experience. Plus, to keep things civil, there will be moderation tools in place. Admins will be able to remove messages and members, and Instagram will be keeping an eye on things to ensure everyone's following the Community Standards. Safety first, always!

Now, before you get too excited, keep in mind that this is still an "internal prototype." An Instagram spokesperson confirmed that it's not being tested publicly yet. So, there's no guarantee it'll ever see the light of day. But, given that Meta has already rolled out similar "Communities" features in WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger, it seems like they're pretty serious about building these kinds of connection spaces. Remember when Zuckerberg mentioned a new way to connect with people sharing our interests? This might just be it!

Fingers crossed that Instagram Community Chats become a reality. It could be a game-changer for how we connect and interact within the app! We'll keep you updated as we learn more.
