Google Veo 2: AI Video Generation's High Price Tag

Technology

Google has quietly released the pricing for its impressive video-generating AI model, Veo 2, initially unveiled in December. The cost? A hefty 50 cents per second of generated video. This translates to a steep $30 per minute or a staggering $1,800 per hour.

Google DeepMind researcher Jon Barron offered a striking comparison, highlighting the cost against the production budget of “Avengers: Endgame.” While the Marvel blockbuster reportedly cost $356 million, Veo 2's hourly rate equates to approximately $32,000 per second of film. Of course, this comparison isn't entirely fair; users won't necessarily utilize every second generated, and Veo 2 isn't currently producing feature-length films. Google's announcement focused on its capacity to create high-quality clips exceeding two minutes.

Another relevant pricing point is OpenAI's Sora. Access to this competing video generation model is bundled within the $200 monthly ChatGPT Pro subscription, offering a significantly different pricing structure.
