Ampler Nova E-bikes Embrace USB-C Charging for Enhanced Convenience

Electric Vehicles

Ampler, the Estonia-based e-bike manufacturer known for its reliable and accessible direct-to-consumer models, has just unveiled a game-changer: the Nova and Nova Pro e-bikes, the first commercial electric bikes to feature USB-C charging integrated directly into the frame.

USB-C: A Universal Charging Solution

The integration of USB-C charging is a smart move, aligning with the European Union's push for standardization and reduced electronic waste. This means you can potentially use your laptop charger to power up your e-bike, and vice versa (though at a modest 15W for gadget charging). If you forget your charger, finding a compatible one becomes significantly easier.

The Nova series e-bikes boast relatively small 48V 336Wh integrated batteries, which can be charged from zero to full in a speedy three hours using a USB-C PD 3.1 charger operating at up to 140W. Ampler has also ensured compatibility with older USB-C PD 3.0 chargers like those from Ikea and MacBook, offering flexibility for users.

While Ampler sells its own 140W USB-C PD 3.1 charger for €80 (approximately $87), the convenience of using a standard charger is a major advantage. The bikes are not available in the US.

Nova vs. Nova Pro: What's the Difference?

Both the €2,990 (approximately $3,230) Nova and €3,490 (approximately $3,770) Nova Pro come in step-through and step-over frames, available in three sizes to suit most riders. They are equipped with EU standard 250W motors, reaching a maximum speed of 25km/h. These models are essentially improved versions of the Stout and Stella, designed for better accessory compatibility.

The base Nova features wider 27.5-inch tires and a nine-speed transmission relying on a traditional chain and derailleur. The Nova Pro, on the other hand, boasts a single-speed Gates Carbon belt drive, making it an ideal choice for flat terrains like Amsterdam, compared to the Nova's 10-speed Shimano Deore chain-driven system.

Availability and Support

The Nova and Nova Pro are currently available for pre-order in the UK, EU, and Switzerland, with shipping scheduled to begin in June. Ampler provides support through official service centers in Germany and a network of "Ampler Friendly" workshops across Europe. Each bike is backed by a two-year warranty and a 14-day return policy.
